An international poetry magazine proposing a solution to men-women non-parity
In Canada, Quebec province has a good reputation, concerning the space given to women’s expression. But surprisingly, a 3 years university study sponsored by Quebec Union of writers showed in 2019 that men-woman parity is far from being achieved.
This presentation will explain briefly the surprising facts that emerged from this study and reflect on their consequences on today’s writers.
Do we have as many books written by women as by men in our houses? Are they thought as much in schools and universities? How is their work covered by media and literature magazines? Is the same language used to comment their work? Are they as present in literary forms like essay and novel?
Writers and people in the audience will be invited to share their own experience regarding men-woman parity in literature in their society and its consequences. The current project of exchange of residencies « Women of the north », bringing quebec writers to Sweden and swedish poets to Quebec, will be explained. Ideas of solutions will be shared. At the end, there will be a call for submissions for texts to be published in Quebec on this topic in 2025.
Presentator: Nancy R Lange, poet, publisher of Femmes de parole magazine and president of RAPPEL: Parole-Création (writer and artist association).
